Alternate Days Fasting

The secret to long life? Starve yourself on alternate days to boost brain power and shed weight
By Pamela Owen

Starving yourself on alternate days can make you live longer, according to scientists.

A group of Americans have said that fasting on and off can boost brain power and help to lose weight at the same time.

The National Institutes for Aging said their research was based on giving animals the bare minimum of calories required to keep them alive and results showed they lived up to twice as long.

The diet has since been tested on humans and appears to protect the heart, circulatory system and brain against age-related diseases like Alzheimer's.

'Dietery energy restriction extends lifespan and protects the brain and cardiovascular system against age-related disease,' said Mark Mattson, head of the laboratory of neurosciences at the NIA and professor of neuroscience at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.

'We have found that dietary energy restriction, particularly when administered in intermittent bouts of major caloric restriction, such as alternative day fasting, activates cellular stress response pathways in neurones,' he said to the Sunday Times.

In one set of experiments, a group of mice were only fed on alternate days while others were allowed to eat daily.

Both groups were given unlimited access to food on the days they were allowed to eat and eventually consumed the same amount of calories.

Professor Mattson said he found the mice fed on alternate days were more sensitive to insulin and needed to produce less of it.

High levels of the hormone, which is produced to control sugar levels after a meal or snack, are usually associated with lower brain power and are at a higher risk of diabetes.

The brains from both sets of rodents were then examined and Professor Mattson said he found the calorie restricted diets appeared to improve the function of brain synapses.

These are the junctions between brain cells which promote the generation of new cells and make them more resistant to stress.

Previous research has found that starving yourself for a few days can help in the fight against cancer.

Scientists found that depriving healthy cells of the food they need sends them into a survival mode, making them highly resistant to stress and damage caused from chemotherapy.

Experts have described the behaviour similar to animals waiting out the winter by hibernating.

Hyde Farm (£2.5m mansion to be made out of straw)

£2.5m mansion to be made out of straw

THE lesson learned in the fairy tale of the three little pigs is that straw is not the best material to build a house with.
However, an Oxfordshire landowner is hoping to build a £2.5m mansion near Faringdon made out of 25 tonnes of hay.
Yet any future inhabitants need not be afraid of the big bad wolf as tests have shown the straw bricks, which are covered in a lime render, can withstand hurricanes and even earthquakes.
The planned seven-bedroom home in Baulking, complete with eight acres of garden, a lake, a moat and tennis courts, has been strongly opposed by local residents because of its scale.
The application for the scheme at Hyde Farm is currently being considered by a planning inspector after Vale of White Horse District Council blocked the bid last year.
The council ruled that the size of the development was inappropriate and unnecessary.
A decision on the appeal is expected any day.
In order for the huge project to get planning permission architects are trying to prove the scheme is a worthy design.
Bath-based Nick Shipp said his was a design which would show that building with straw was possible on a large scale.
He said: “It is the very best insulator material on the market.”
Mr Shipp also said that the building would not be out of place, adding: “There are very many examples of large houses built in the English countryside.”
If given the go-ahead, the mansion would be the largest property in the UK made of straw.
However, Baulking Parish Council objected to the plan.
In a statement it said: “The scale, location and design is not in keeping with any aspects of the community and parishioners fear the development will not only harm the character and appearance of the conservation area, but also cause harm to the social fabric and life of the village.”
The idea came from landowner Jamie Lonsdale, 53.
If approved the project would use 19 inch thick energy efficient straw bales and solar panels covering 970 sq ft to makeit carbon neutral.
Heating bills in the eco-friendly home are expected to be one fifth of properties of a similar size.
Planning consultant Terry Gashe, of DPDS Consulting, said the house and grounds would be hidden from the village.
He said: “This is the 21st century equivalent of the big country house.
“It is an outstanding example of contemporary architecture.”
The district council blocked the bid in May last year and the appeal was lodged in September.
In a decision notice council planning officers said it was: “An unsustainable and inappropriate form of development that undermines the fundamental principle that countryside should be protected for its own sake.”

Hounds of Love is a 1985 album by English singer Kate Bush. It was Bush's fifth studio album, and her second to top the album charts. It has since been certified Double Platinum in the UK.[1] In 2002, Q Magazine named Hounds of Love the third Greatest Album of All-Time by a Female Artist, and in 2000, the twentieth Greatest British Album of All Time.[2]

Overview

Bush's most successful album commercially, 1985's Hounds of Love reflects Bush's continuing growth as an artist and producer. To avoid the huge expense of her previous album, The Dreaming, and to support her increasingly slow and painstaking recording process, Bush was inspired to build her own 24-track studio in the barn behind her family home.[3] Hounds of Love ultimately topped the charts in the UK, knocking Madonna's Like A Virgin from the number one position.[4] Making extensive use of the Fairlight CMI synthesizer, piano, traditional Irish instruments, and layered vocals, Hounds of Love is a "complex and richly layered work."[5]
The album takes advantage of the LP vinyl format, with Side One, titled "Hounds of Love", containing five unrelated songs linked only by the common theme of love and relationships; these include the four singles "Running Up That Hill", "Cloudbusting", "Hounds of Love", and "The Big Sky". "Running Up That Hill" became one of her biggest hits in the UK, and re-introduced Bush to American listeners, receiving considerable airplay at the time of its release. The second side of the album, titled "The Ninth Wave", takes its name from Tennyson's poem, "Idylls of the King", about the legendary King Arthur's reign, and is a single piece of music, a song cycle which Bush describes as "about a person who is alone in the water for the night...it's about their past, present and future coming to keep them awake, to stop them drowning, to stop them going to sleep until the morning comes."[6] In an interview with French television in 1985, Bush said she thinks of the two sides as "two separate albums."[7]
A 1997 CD re-release of the album included six bonus tracks: 12" mixes of "The Big Sky" and "Running Up That Hill", and the B-side singles "Under The Ivy", "Burning Bridge", "My Lagan Love", and "Be Kind To My Mistakes", which was written for the film Castaway starring Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe),[8] and used for its opening title sequence.
In 2010, Audio Fidelity reissued Hounds of Love on vinyl with new mastering by Steve Hoffman.[9]
A 10" pink vinyl version of the album was released for Record Store Day 2011, with 1,000 copies produced worldwide.[10]

In August 1985 the British music magazine NME featured Bush in a "Where Are They Now" article. Two days later, on The Wogan Show, the single "Running Up that Hill" was premiered for the first time. The single entered the UK singles chart at no.9 (a considerable feat at that time) and ultimately peaked in the top 3. The Hounds of Love album entered the UK album chart at no.1, knocking Madonna's Like a Virgin from the top position.[19]
The album marked her breakthrough into the American charts with the Top 40 hit "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)". The album also yielded a set of videos, the most famous of which is "Cloudbusting", directed by Julian Doyle, and co-starring Donald Sutherland. The video — like the song — was inspired by the life of psychologist Wilhelm Reich.
In 1998, Q magazine readers voted Hounds of Love the 48th greatest album of all time, while in 2000 the same magazine placed it at number 20 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2006, Q magazine placed the album at #4 in its list of "40 Best Albums of the '80s".[20] In January 2006, NME named it the 41st best British album of all time. The 19th edition of British Hit Singles & Albums, published by Guinness in May 2006, included a list of the Top 100 albums of all time, as voted by readers of the book and NME readers, which placed Hounds of Love at Number 70. In 2008, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the album should be given consideration when listing albums released between 1978 and 1988 that have stood the test of time while remaining influential and enjoyable to this day.[21] In 2012, Slant Magazine listed the album at #10 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980's".[22]

Poem: Slough

Slough
by John Betjeman (1906 - 1984)
http://www-cdr.stanford.edu/intuition/Slough.html
John Betjeman published his poem about Slough in 1937 in the collected works Continual Dew. Slough was becoming increasingly industrial and some housing conditions were very cramped. In willing the destruction of Slough, Betjeman urges the bombs to pick out the vulgar profiteers but to spare the bald young clerks. He really was very fond of his fellow human beings. Slough is much improved nowadays and he might be pleasantly surprised by a stroll there.

Slough

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.
Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.
And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:
And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.
But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.
It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead
And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.
In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.
Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

Jerusalem by William Blake

         JERUSALEM (from 'Milton')

    by: William Blake (1757-1827)

AND did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
    On England's pleasant pastures seen?

    And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
    Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
    Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
