Intervention in Syria

Yesterday, British Parliament voted against intervening in Syria. An interesting decision. I have mixed feelings; first of all, I support intervention to protect innocent victims of Assad's brutal dictatorship but on the other hand, this could mean a change in direction of our foreign policy and becoming more independent from the USA. It also means that the likelihood of any conflict between the UK and Iran over Syria or any future conflict between the two countries over Iran's nuclear programme is now highly unlikely. Excellent news for an English-Persian. It also means that Britain will cease automatically joining the USA in foreign conflicts in the future. As far as the Syrians are concerned, the victims and potential victims of Assad's slaughter have my moral support. Even if the UK does not get involved, it looks like the USA will carry out a limited military strike against Assad's forces. Assad's regime will eventually fall. He cannot possibly survive. Distancing ourselves from the USA will do the UK a lot of good.

Why I contribute to the NSPCC.

This week parents of a young boy were sentenced to life for the cruel murder of their child. For many years, I have made a regular monthly contribution to the NSPCC whose aim is to prevent cruelty to children. We should all make a contribution, no matter how small, to empower these organisations. Sadly, in recent times, there have been several of these cases of extreme cruelty leading to the deaths of young children here in the UK. We must all be more vigilant in the future and social services and the police should not accept the excuses of any parent when there is the slightest suspicion of abuse.

My List of Greatest Leaders of the last 100 Years (1914-2013)

1. Churchill - Defeated Hitler. WW2 would not have been won without Winston Churchill. Without doubt, the most charismatic Western political leader of the last 100 years. Voted the most popular Briton in history and rightly so. No British PM since has come anywhere near him. When he led Britain, we knew we would never be defeated. He also had a way with words and inspired President Kennedy.

2. Khomeini - Opposed the USA (was the David to america's Goliath). Promoted his religion the way a religious leader should. I'm a Catholic but he could have persuaded me to become a Muslim. Khomeini is the reason why Islam has now become the most powerful and most followed religion in the world. He is mis-understood by the West. He had extraordinary personal charisma and survived an 8 year war with Saddam Hussein, counter-revolution, the Shah, Carter, Reagan and the Soviet Union. His legacy lives on. He did all this when he was in his 80s. Like Gandhi, he ignored the trappings of wealth & greed.

3. Gorbachev - Ended the Cold War. Thatcher & Reagan will claim this for themselves but this is nonsense. His significance is far greater than he is now being given credit for. Yeltsin stole some of his thunder but Gorbachev started the whole process. When he came to power the world got very excited. Like Kennedy he had charisma but unlike Kennedy he backed up his words with action. He made a real difference.

4. Mandela - like Khomeini a great revolutionary but unlike Khomeini popular in the West. The most popular black leader in history. Without Mandela, apartheid could not have ended in the relatively peaceful way that it did. A leader of white people as well as the black majority. Mandela exceeded the myth he had when he was in prison.

5. Blair - Best British PM (ignoring Churchill's post WW2 government) since Attlee. Took the right but unpopular decision to bring down the evil Saddam Hussein. Introduced New Labour. Unfortunately, the stupid people inside and outside the Labour Party don't understand that this was the winning formula. It made our Party the natural Party of government. The left within our Party still don't understand that "their" Party is unelectable. Blair is still the most popular Labour PM for over 50 years and would win power today if he returned as leader of the Party. The media incorrectly suggest that the Gulf War destroyed Blair's image. This is untrue. His reputation was damaged but he is still the most popular British politician over the last 50 years.

6. Wilson - Labour PM who was smeared by the CIA because he refused to back the USA over Vietnam. Britain's last truly independent Prime Minister.

7. Castro - Survived Kennedy and every US President since. Not sure about his politics but he refused to bow to the bullying superpower on his doorstep.

8. Pope John Paul 11 - the best leader of the Catholic church in modern times and helped bring down the Soviet Union. Popular because he opposed the liberalisation of the Catholic Church.

9. Mossadegh - Like Khomeini, he opposed interference of the superpowers in Iran's internal affairs. He was Iran's Gandhi.

10. Obama - A good US President (which is a rarity) but nevertheless over-rated. Under-achieved so far but unlike his predecessors he is not a warmongerer. He needs to deliver big in his second term. Being the first black US President is not enough.

Bowling: My First Match

Just played my first competitive match on what was the hottest day of the year. Needless to say that the fitter and better man (i.e: my opponent Ian) won the match 22-2. Ian was far from a novice though, a fine player and worthy winner. Despite losing heavily, I enjoyed the game. In one of my photos, I am showing of my pecs !

Elvis Costello at The Anvil

I saw the great man perform at The Anvil in Basingstoke. Nice little venue. I have had the pleasure of seeing him live 6 times before at the Hammersmith Odeon (Punch The Clock tour),The Dominion (Goodbye Cruel World tour),The Royalty Theatre (Spinning Songbook tour), The Royal Albert Hall (Spinning Songbook tour), The Hammersmith Apollo (The Delivery Man tour) and The Anvil (Spinning Songbook tour). I may have been to the Odeon twice but not certain. I'm sure I saw him after King of America or Blood & Chocolate came out or maybe one or both were combined with the Songbook tour in 1986/87. I also went another time to the Royal Albert Hall to see him but left before the concert started due to illness. Anyway, enough of this 'I saw him X many times before' childishness. For the record, at least 6 times !

As always, Elvis Costello gave a perfect show, playing almost every song you want him to play. "Almost" because he has written so many great songs,he would have to perform 2 or 3 nights to get them all in. The only song missing for me was 'Shipbuilding' but its absence did not diminish the show.

I saw the spinning wheel show twice before in the 1980s at the Royal Albert Hall (with my college chums & good mate) and a few months earlier at the Royalty Theatre. This time Elvis Costello was joined by a dancer in a cage, who danced to many of his songs; fortunately I didn't get too excited by this and was not distracted from the main attraction.

The highlights of the night were 'Tramp The Dirt Down' - not exactly a "love" song to Thatcher, 'Alison' and 'I Want You'. Costello's voice gets better and better. He has never really been appreciated for the quality of his voice but his singing is as good as it gets. His singing on 'Alison' and 'I Want You' is perfect for those two songs about lost love. His guitar playing on 'I Want You' is outstanding. The Imposters were also on fine form as usual.

Elvis surprised the audience by coming off stage and singing amongst the crowd while the band were playing on stage. He came up to where the sound engineers were near the circle. I took a photo (below) and he can just about be seen if you alter the size of the photo. Sorry to the woman in the row in front of me to the right who appeared a little annoyed.

In my view, Elvis Costello is the most important singer/songwriter/indoor live performer over the last 35 years. I'm a fan of Paul Weller (who runs him close) and Bruce Springsteen (great outdoor live performer) but Elvis Costello is the best in the business. Going to see Paul Weller for the first time in October, so looking forward to seeing how he performs live.

Photos to be added.

Iran's Presidential Election 2013

The Presidential campaign in Iran seems to be low key. I hope the people make a wise choice.

Whatever peoples views, the Islamic Republic is here to stay and it will be up to the spiritual leader of Iran to decide on the extent of any reform permitted.

A reformer is therefore not necessary but a diplomat is ! Iran requires a President who has the capacity to persuade the powers that be, both internally and externally.

It is time for the Iranian Government to reach a compromised settlement over the middle-east (accepting a two-state solution), adopting a more critical or at least a neutral position on Syria and improving its relationship with the West.

Building Company - Competent & Good Value

If any one wants some building work - mainly refurbishment and / or extensions - let me know. I know a good Company that will carry out the work competently and at very competitive prices. I know because I also submit tenders for the Company.
They do a lot of work for the Public Sector and are therefore approved and reliable. The Company is more than happy to be invited to tender in competition with others.

Patriot of Persia - Dr Mossadegh

An excellent biography of the extraordinary politician and human-being, Dr Muhammad Mossadegh. He was truly a great Iranian patriot. Being English-Iranian, I am embarrassed by Britain's "colonial" role in Iran at that time and its exploitation of Iranian oil. I have to side 100% with Mossadegh on this matter and his distrust of the British at that time was understandable. British officials of the period come across as extremely pompous and out of touch, not only with a changing world but also a post-colonial Britain. The coup against Mossadegh in 1953 was a complete disaster for Iran as Mossadegh was the right man in charge at the right time. All the problems that occurred in Iran after 1953 were the responsibility of the USA and the CIA. Again, they miscalculated in 1979. There can be no doubt, Dr Mossadegh was a truly great hero and should have equal status to Gandhi. The only reason he isn't is because he is a huge embarrassment to both Britain and the USA.

Habemus Papam

Pope Francis 1 Elected 13th March 2012

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen as the new Pope and Leader of the Catholic Church.

As a Catholic, I'm pleased with the choice by the Cardinals. Like his two predecessors, he believes in traditional values.

He is from South America (Argentina)
and is a Jesuit. By all accounts, a humble and intelligent man. He also has vast experience and supports social justice.
